To
celebrate a student’s birthday, we will not be having the traditional birthday
snack (cupcakes, cookies, etc) in class. Instead, each child will receive a
gift bag and a card signed by classmates. There will also be other ways we will
honor a student on the day of their birthday to help make the day even more
special. For those students whose birthdays fall on a day when school is not in
session, or those who have birthdays during the summer, I will make
arrangements ahead of time so that all students have a chance to celebrate their
birthday during school with their classmates.
Spotlight Students
In addition, we
will be celebrating each student in the class by assigning him/her to be the
spotlight student for a week. During
each student’s “spotlight” week, a poster (collage) will be on display in our
classroom for the entire week. Some
ideas to include on the poster are photographs, drawings or words about what
makes the person special, favorite things, family and/or an aspect of his/her
culture that make him/her unique. Students may also choose to create a Power Point
slideshow instead. The file may be sent in with the student on a flash drive or
may be sent using a Google account.
During the week,
the student will be assigned a specific time to share his/her poster. I have tried to assign each student’s
spotlight on the week of his/her birthday when possible. A few students may have a birthday in the
same week so I had to schedule their spotlight on a week that is close to their
birthday or double up. If there are two
students in one week, each student will have his or her own day to present his
or her poster. For the students with
summer birthdays, I was able to schedule spotlights during open weeks in June.
